Injured dolphin found in MS Sound dies

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - On-lookers cheered as two teenagers helped rescue an injured dolphin from the Mississippi Sound Monday.

Allyssa Cook saw the dolphin and swam out to touch it, but soon realized it was in trouble. Another teen, Reid Harrison, was watching and swam out to assist when he saw that Cook was trying to help the animal.

"The dolphin kept coming a little closer and we just kind of grabbed it. We just kept it still until the IMMS people came," Cook said.

Reid Harrison, visiting from Jasper, Alabama said he had never seen anything like this before.

One of the witnesses called the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies for help. By the time they arrived, the teens had already calmed the dolphin and brought it closer to shore.

IMMS workers spent about an hour checking the male dolphin. Then they loaded the 350 pound animal to take back to IMMS, but Director Moby Solangi said despite the best efforts of everyone involved, they were unable to save him.
